What are Pellets?

Biopellets are made from pure wood, usually chips and other byproducts, which are dried, ground up, and compressed into small cylinders. They usually contain between 4.8 to 4.9 kWh/kg. Both governments and people desire to reduce the use of oil and electricity for heating, and pellets offer a solid alternative to this. In Norway, Enova SF is the primary tool used to help make the swap. There are multiple programs and grants for solutions. Pellets are a good choice for larger combustion plants, such as those used in schools, hospitals, commercial buildings, etc. Multiple buildings can also be connected to the same plant.

Environment

Pellets are a renewable and climate friendly alternative. CO2 is bound to the trees while they grow, and is released again when they die. This means that the burning of biomass is CO2 neutral, as it releases the same amount of CO2 as the trees gathered.

Waste

Burnt pellets create very little waste. Between 0.3 and 0.5% of the pellet becomes ash, which can later be used as fertiliser for lawns or gardens. The smoke released by the pipe is primarily water vapour.
