The containers are produced according to ISO specifications for sizes and connections for different modes of transport, otherwise called intermodal solutions. This means that the containers will be usable for every international transport mode, whether it is rails, shipping or roads.

Exchange containers are also produced according to ISO standards for connections, though without any top connectors. These also have legs which allows lorries to load and unload the container without the use of a truck or a crane. The most common sizes for these are 7.15m, 7.45m, and 7.82m, with the latter two being the most common.
The containers are available in a range of variants; "standard", "high cube" for extra height, and "pallet-wide" which follows the EU standard for pallets. The sizes range from 20' to 45', although the most common sizes are 20' and 40'. The latter is widely regarded as the most flexible choice.
